Television Commercials

I chose to watch one hour of prime time television that comes on at 9:00 on a Monday night.  I actually recorded the show so I could concentrate on the commercials.  There were 42 commercials that played during the one hour show...ridiculous.  This absolutely reaffirms why I record the show and fast forward through the commercials.

Out of the 42 commercials five of them were shown twice and one was shown 4 times.  The one that was shown 4 times as the network advertising the launch of a new mini series, so really I guess it was advertising for itself.

The Nivea commercial was a good example of an "unfinished statement"  The commercial is about a lotion that last for 48 hours but ends with the statement "2X the almond oil".  The question is 2 times what?  Click here to view commercial

The purpose of a qualifier is to intensify an adjective or adverb.  The Lancome commercial for "Youth activating serum" is a good example of a qualifier.  The commercial is about how you should love your age, but yet you should purchase their "youth activating" serum so you look younger and no longer look the age you are supposed to be proud of.

There were several connotative commercials and most of them were surrounded by the product implying if you use me, you will be more energetic:

  • Silk Almond Milk -- Drink the milk and you will be motivated to exercise
  • Meta Mucil -- Take it daily and you will feel lighter and you will have more energy
  • Naked Tea -- Drinking Naked Tea will give you the energy to make a decision like walking up the stairs rather than taking the elevator

I did not find any of the commercial to be deceptive.  In theory if something does give you an energy boost, then you are more likely to feel more energetic.
