Did Twitter end product spin?

What is a Public Relations Spin?

The selective putting together of facts and the shaping of nuance to support a particular view of a story.  Spin is considered to be a form of propaganda.  To spin something is to communicate it in a way that changes the way people are likely to perceive it.

The following You Tube video is advertising Range Rover.  It was definitely a cutting edge video of its time.  It took people a while to realize it was actually advertising the new luxury car.

Communication directors for politicians are finding themselves more and more having to put a "spin" on their candidates actions in order to make them look the best in the eye of the public.  This has definitely taken on new meaning in the age of social media, especially when the candidate or person of interest is active on social media.

This article describes three ways that social media has changed public relations:

Social Media, especially twitter has made companies more customer focused than before.  Many companies today, hire staff to do nothing but reply to or look out for negative social media.  The airline industry is a great example of this.  Unfortunately, British Airlines learned the power of twitter the hard way, but other airlines embrace social media.  They use it to tweet out flight status and also use it to rebook cancelled or delayed flights.

Social media also impacts how customer facing companies handle situations.  Using the airline industry again, it is way to easy to video an altercation between a flight attendant and a passenger and post it.  I think it definitely makes the company rethink how they interact with people.

Social media also gives the consumer 24/7 access to voice their opinion.  Chances are if they company is large enough, they have people dedicated to monitoring their social media feeds for either positive or negative feedback.

I do think it holds companies more accountable for how they advertise their products because they know they will be subject to social media feedback.
